DIGITAL PRINT OPERATOR

Lafayette, IN

Put your digital print experience to work

SDI Innovations is looking for an experienced Digital Print Operator who takes pride in quality printing, understands production equipment, and enjoys helping a team succeed.

You’ll operate digital presses and finishing equipment, troubleshoot production issues, and work closely with the Digital Print Department Manager to keep jobs moving safely and efficiently. You’ll also serve as a technical resource for other operators, sharing your knowledge and supporting consistent production practices.

Our equipment includes a Canon ColorStream roll-fed inkjet press, Ricoh digital cut-sheet equipment, laminators, die-cutters, and other finishing equipment. Experience with these platforms is valuable, and experience with comparable commercial equipment is welcome.

This role offers an experienced operator the opportunity to take on greater technical responsibility and contribute to improvements across a growing digital print operation.

What you will do

  • Operate digital presses: Set up, run, monitor, and adjust high-volume roll-fed inkjet and cut-sheet equipment according to job tickets, production specifications, and approved procedures.
  • Maintain print quality: Check color, registration, density, and output consistency; identify defects and make appropriate adjustments throughout production.
  • Support finishing: Set up and operate laminating, die-cutting, and related finishing equipment, checking finished products for accuracy and quality.
  • Troubleshoot production issues: Investigate equipment, media, ink, print-quality, and workflow problems. Resolve issues within your training and authorization, and escalate problems requiring maintenance or manufacturer support.
  • Perform operator maintenance: Complete routine cleaning, inspections, and approved adjustments following manufacturer instructions and company safety procedures, including applicable lockout/tagout requirements.
  • Coordinate production: Work with the Department Manager to sequence jobs against schedules and ship dates, communicate delays, and maintain accurate production records.
  • Improve workflow: Help reduce waste, improve equipment uptime, document standard operating procedures, and strengthen print-to-finish processes.
  • Support other operators: Assist with training, provide hands-on technical guidance, and model safe work practices and consistent quality standards.

The Operator supports daily workflow and technical development. The Digital Print Department Manager retains department management and personnel responsibilities.

Required qualifications

  • At least three years of experience operating commercial digital printing equipment, or equivalent hands-on experience demonstrating the required skills.
  • Working knowledge of digital print production, job setup, and production workflow.
  • Mechanical and technical aptitude, with experience troubleshooting equipment or print-quality problems.
  • Ability to read and follow job tickets, production specifications, work instructions, and safety procedures.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to identify and correct production defects.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize assigned work, and recognize when an issue requires escalation.
  • Clear communication, organization, and willingness to share knowledge with other operators.

Preferred experience

  • High-volume roll-fed inkjet and digital cut-sheet printing, particularly experience with both.
  • Canon ColorStream, Ricoh, or comparable commercial equipment from other manufacturers.
  • Digital front ends (DFEs), raster image processors (RIPs), and print workflow systems.
  • Roll-fed paper handling, laminating, die-cutting, or other commercial finishing equipment.
  • Color management, calibration, or variable-data printing.
  • Training operators or serving as a senior or lead operator.

Experience with every listed platform is not required.

Work environment and schedule

This position works on-site in a manufacturing and production environment around operating print and finishing equipment.

The work includes standing and walking during production, repetitive equipment and material-handling tasks, and moving paper and finished products using appropriate handling methods and equipment.

Employees must follow equipment safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment. Essential functions may be performed with reasonable accommodation.

Overtime or adjusted schedules may be required to meet production needs. Overtime is paid in accordance with applicable law.
