A Brief History of National School Librarian Day
Every April, School Library Month shines a spotlight on the incredible impact of school libraries and librarians, thanks to the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). It’s a time for schools to celebrate and showcase how libraries fuel learning and creativity. The idea took off in the early 1980s, led by Lucille Thomas, who AASL President Judy King appointed. After years of planning, the first official celebration kicked off on April 1, 1985, with a big ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol.
As School Library Month grew, it became clear that librarians deserved special recognition. After all, behind every great library is a dedicated librarian who guides students and teaches them a love of reading and essential research skills. National School Librarian Day was established during School Library Month to honor their hard work, and the first official celebration was held in 2011. Since then, April 4th has been a day to appreciate these incredible educators who help shape young minds every day.
